Roxby Downs Women’s Group
Connection starts with a safe space.
When local woman Ali first thought about starting a women’s group, it came from a simple but powerful observation: there were limited opportunities for older women to connect socially in Roxby. She noticed loneliness, especially among women who were no longer connected through work or family networks, and wanted to create something welcoming, casual, and free of charge.
After sharing the idea on Facebook, the initial response showed just how strong the need was. While the group was originally intended for older women, it quickly grew to include women of all ages. Many attendees were seeking connection, support, and a space where they felt comfortable being themselves.
Over time, the group has become a supportive community. Ali has witnessed women gain confidence and form lasting friendships. One woman, newly arrived from overseas, began attending to practice her English and now participates confidently and consistently. Another young woman, who previously struggled to leave the house, found the courage to attend and has since stepped into a leadership role within the group. A young mother attends with her child and has built meaningful friendships and connections with women she may not have otherwise met.
The Community Hub has played a vital role in the group’s success. Access to a welcoming space at no cost has removed barriers, allowing the group to remain open to everyone. Support from Hub staff, access to tea and coffee, and a friendly, flexible environment helped create a space where women felt comfortable returning each week.
Ali described the Community Hub as irreplaceable, particularly in a remote, regional town like Roxby. What started as a simple gathering has evolved into a strong, inclusive group that reduces isolation, builds confidence, and fosters stronger community connections.
Women’s Group shows the power of community-led initiatives when they are supported by accessible, welcoming spaces - creating meaningful social impact through connection, inclusion, and belonging
